In the 1930s, during America’s worst financial crises, the
administration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt employed
photographers to document the plight of everyday folk in the
Great Depression in order to push forward with their New Deal
programs. Documentary photographers Dorothea Lange and Walker
Evans were prolific frontrunners of these efforts and their
extraordinary photographs continue to endure today. Their
artistic and documentary mastery and historical importance
provide key insight into a monumental turning point in
American history.
